The first focus is for leaders who want to level up their communication skills with people. This approach reveals the initial gaps in their leadership communication, such as the habit of listening to people only to guide them where the leader wants, rather than understanding where the individual is and helping them create their own roadmap. When leaders listen in this way, they achieve better buy-in. Even if a leader tells someone exactly what they need to do to succeed—and the advice is accurate—true buy-in only happens when clarity comes from the individual’s own thinking. People need to articulate the truth for themselves; otherwise, there may be agreement, but not genuine ownership. Buy-in occurs when the individual gains clarity and chooses to fully own the direction.
Frustration often arises between leaders and those they coach because leaders see what needs to be done and communicate it, but the coachee may repeatedly return to the same issues. This happens when the process moves too quickly and the leader doesn’t listen deeply enough to understand the gaps between where the person is and where they want to go. There’s more to effective coaching than just outlining action steps; leaders must listen for underlying needs and obstacles. Confidence isn’t built simply by observing a confident leader—it grows when the leader slows down and supports the individual in building confidence in themselves and their goals.
